MoneyPuck’s MVPs

Given our interest in ‘valuing’ hockey players it should come as no surprise that we’ve got some opinions on who should be declared this year’s “Most Valuable Player”! Now we know that the MVP award takes in a lot of intangible factors like who was the most valuable to their team and isn’t strictly about what their equivalent salary would have been for the year if they were paid perfectly but that’s what we do best so we’re just going to talk that!

#1 Brent Burns

It sounds like Brent is more or less out of the MVP race from a mainstream media perspective but we’re here to tell you that he actually had the best season of anyone. Now that’s largely because the way we typically run our tool ignores all defensive statistics and only cares about the offensive and how those numbers compare to other players at your position but let’s forget about that because our conventional metrics tell us that Brent Burns’ season was worth a whopping $12.2 million and that’s just incredible! Basically, the guy played a ton of minutes ~25 minutes/night and scored almost 3x as much as the average defenseman at even strength.

#2 Erick Karlsson

As you probably should have expected when you saw Burns at #1 is that Karlsson is #2. He’s right behind Burns in the defensemen scoring categories and he also soaks up a lot minutes for the Ottawa Senators (almost 27 per night!). Now the fact that he is still behind Burns in points but higher in minutes means that his rates were a little lower but he’s still more than 2x the average NHL defensemen when it comes to scoring at even strength and ultimately his season was worth $9.9 million!

#3 Victor Hedman

Yes another defensemen…we apologize but there is just a lot more variability between the best offensive defensemen in the league and the average defenseman when compared to the forward positions. Which ultimately makes these standouts really valuable! So here we have our last defensemen on the list who comes in at $9.4 million this year.

#4 Connor McDavid

The potential frontrunner for the actual MVP award this year and the Art Ross trophy winner, Connor McDavid, is certainly a very valuable player (especially because he’s still on an entry level contract!) and this year we have the value of his season pegged at $8.7 million. As mentioned above our elite forwards are definitely scoring more than average but McDavid is still not quite 2x the average NHL centerman.

#5 Brad Marchand

I know you were expecting Sidney Crosby but the truth is that those handful of lost games cost him just enough that he drops out of our top 5 and Brad Marchand sneaks in. Which is a real credit to Marchand because I don’t think anyone expected him to crack 80 points this year and get into this conversation at all but here we are looking at a season that was worth $8.4 million!
